AMD passes Nvidia in discrete graphics market

According to data gathered by Mercury Research, this past quarter AMD held a 51% piece of the graphics card market, while Nvidia settled for 49%. One year ago, the roles were reversed, with Nvidia securing a 59% share, and AMD 41%.

Overall, the graphics chip (integrated and discrete) world in Q2 still had Intel on top with a 54.3% share, followed by AMD with 24.5% and Nvidia with 19.8%. The difference between AMD and Nvidia could be compacted in Q3 due to the release of the GeForce GTX 460 but the Santa Clara-based company (Nvidia) will likely have to settle for third place in the second half of 2010.
