AMD passes Nvidia in discrete graphics market
Overall, the graphics chip (integrated and discrete) world in Q2 still had Intel on top with a 54.3% share, followed by AMD with 24.5% and Nvidia with 19.8%. The difference between AMD and Nvidia could be compacted in Q3 due to the release of the GeForce GTX 460 but the Santa Clara-based company (Nvidia) will likely have to settle for third place in the second half of 2010.

ASUS Working on MARS II Dual GTX 480
ASUS' ambitious attempt is in the design stage deep inside its R&D, where the design is in an evaluation state. The R&D gave us some exclusive pictures of the MARS II PCB to treat you with. To begin with, the card's basic design is consistent with almost every other dual-GPU NVIDIA card in recent past. There are two independent GPU systems, each with its own VRM and memory, which are interconnected by an internal SLI, and connected to the system bus by an nForce 200 bridge chip. On this card, two GF100 GPUs with the same configuration as GeForce GTX 480 (GF100-375-A3) are used, each having 480 CUDA cores, and connecting to 1536 MB of GDDR5 memory across a 384-bit wide memory interface.
ASUS' innovations kick in right from the PCB, since it takes a lot of effort to keep such a design electrically stable, as well form an overclockers' product. MARS II uses a PCB with 3 oz copper layers to increase electrical stability, and used a strong VRM. Each GPU system is fed by an 8+2 phase VRM of its own, which use a new Super Alloy choke that reduces core energy loss. The card takes its power input from three 8-pin power inputs, which are fused.
The card is quad SLI capable, and can pair with another of its kind (and probably single GTX 480s). To cool this monstrosity, ASUS is coming up with a beefier than ever cooling solution. With the product being still at an evaluation stage, how long it will take to reach production, or whether it will in the first place, remains to be seen.

GeForce GTX 460 effect - Radeon HD 5830 slipping to $199
Initially, the quite criticized (for not delivering a good performance/cost ratio) Radeon HD 5830 was priced at $239 but that was when Nvidia had nothing to compete and now that it does, and adjustment has been made , in the advantage of consumers looking to get a DX11 card.
It's been said that the HD 5830 should cost less than the 768MB GeForce GTX 460 in order for it to be a good alternative but it's likely AMD isn't rushing into a bloody price war just yet.

Intel Says That Celeron Will Continue to Live On
"The rumor is not true, Intel has no plan to phase out the Celeron brand in 2011. Intel Celeron processors continue to provide a low-cost computing solution for basic computing needs," wrote Barry Sum, an Intel spokesman in Hong Kong, in an e-mail response to questions from IDG.
X-bit labs still claims that it has seen roadmaps that show that the Celeron will not be moving to a Nehalem-based architecture, leaving some to wonder what will happen to the Celeron brand when the Core 2 family is no longer in production.
Right now, Intel scales its product offerings with the Atom, Celeron, Pentium, Core 2, and Core i brandings. While it may be a bit crowded now, the eventual drop of the Core 2 Duo products will give Intel a little more room to keep the Celeron in the lineup.

EVGA Precision updated to version 1.9.5
- Added fan tachometer monitoring for Nvidia graphics cards (depending on graphics card and cooling system fan tachometer monitoring can be unavailable)
- Optimized Nvidia driver-level clock frequency monitoring codepath
- Dynamic overclocking and fan speed limits. EVGA Precision no longer uses static slider limits calibration and adjusts the limits dynamically when some external factors affect it (e.g. when minimum fan speed is limited by Nvidia driver)
- Built-in skin sizes have been reduced due to optimized internal skin panels representation and optimized compiled bitmap cache
- Optional skin compression ability in the built-in skin compiler
- Now EVGA Precision uses previously undocumented power user oriented startup mode via the task scheduler under Windows Vista / Windows 7. EVGA Precision launch no longer requires UAC confirmation at Windows startup. Please take a note that Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 runtime libraries must be installed to get new startup mode working
- Now EVGA Precision automatically fixes startup link if or is enabled but the registry or task scheduler startup entry is missing
- Now power users can enable optional DirectInput based hotkeys handler via the configuration file. DirectInput based hotkeys processing can seriously reduce hotkey response time in the applications heavily loading CPU (mostly 3D games) and leaving not enough time for processing standard keyboard input message queues.
- Improved skin engine, now skinned controls support horizontal and/or vertical centering. Skin format reference guide has been updated to document these new alignment modes
- EVGA On-Screen Display server has been upgraded to version 3.7.2. New version gives you the following improvements:
Now screen capture events are identified visually by text message flashing in On-Screen Display during 0.25s

ProlimaTech Super-Mega Heatsink CPU Cooler Debuts
The ProlimaTech Super-Mega uses a very dense array of aluminum and copper fins which are split down the middle to form two separate heatsink halves. The Super-Mega heatsink is comprised of six heat-pipe rods, which span to each side and offer twelve total cooling ends. The nickel-plated copper base secures firmly to the CPU with a new and improved proprietary mounting clip system. This mounting system, which I am pleased to report is the most effective clip mechanism I've ever used, and improves the already impressive design offered on the Megahalems and Armageddon, offers up to 70 pounds of contact pressure while completely removing the chance of processor movement or sliding.
Matching the original Megahalems where it counts most, ProlimaTech has made several extremely subtle changes to the design along with a few obvious additions. For most, the new copper fins will be the most direct difference, but there's more that meets the eye.
ProlimaTech Super-Mega Specifications
Heatsink Dimension: (L)130mm X (W)74mmX (H)158.7mm
Heatsink Weight: 945.3 grams
Heatpipe Ø: 6mm X 6pcs
Accepts 120mm and 140mm cooling fans

Celeron brand said to retire next year
Intel still has a few new Celeron releases planned for Q3 but in the coming months it will be gradually cutting down Celeron production, and halt it completely in 2011. From that moment on Intel's consumer CPU line should be more 'clean' and include 'just' Atom, Pentium and Core Series.

Corsair raises the bar with 2625 MHz DDR3 memory
Corsair announced the launch of Dominator GT GTX6 DDR3 memory, an ultra-high-speed PC3-21000 single-rank 1GB DDR3 DIMM. These modules are among the fastest available in the world today, and are designed for CPU and memory benchmarking as well as for world record attempts.
The GTX6 is tested on the Gigabyte P55A-UD5 motherboard with BIOS Revision F10 at a clock speed of 2625MHz. Specially selected Intel Core i7-860 and Core i7-870 CPUs are used to achieve these memory frequencies. While 2625MHz is the test specification for a single module, we have found in the lab that speeds as high as 2600MHz can typically be achieved when testing as a pair. For ultimate performance, using a CPU cooled using liquid nitrogen, we were able to hit 2976MHz.
“What can I say, except these modules are fast. Really fast,” stated John Beekley, Vice President of Technical Marketing at Corsair. “While not really designed for day to day use, these modules make superb weapons for your overclocking arsenal.”
The final memory frequency was finally reached at 2976MHz, just 24MHz short of 3GHz. Keeping the processor temperature below -80°C played a key role in reaching this frequency. It allowed the memory controller to be cooled enough to reach a high overclock, while not too cold to cause the processor to stop functioning. The memory timings were also slightly loosened to 10-12-11-31-1T in order to allow this higher frequency. Although this was a 351MHz overclock, even higher speeds may well be possible.
Dominator GT GTX6 memory is currently available on Corsair’s web store, at shop.corsair.com. Due to the intensive screening involved, the availability of GTX6 memory is very limited. GTX6 modules are supplied with a limited lifetime warranty and are backed up by Corsair’s legendary customer service and technical support.
The CMGTX6 has a capacity of 1GB, is already up for order through its maker's own online store and has a lifetime warranty. The listed price is of $175, yes that's per 1GB DIMM.

Thermaltake Ships Element V NVIDIA Edition Chassis
The company actually made the existence of this enclosure public no less than roughly six months ago, but has kept biding its time, waiting for the opportune moment when it would start shipping it. That moment has now arrived and the case sells for $219.
The chassis is, as its name implies, specifically meant for gamers that use one or more GeForce video cards. The company actually meant this product as a suitable vessel for GTX 400-using configurations. The full tower, thus, measures 532 (H) x 220 (W) x 537 (D) mm, which means its interior is spacious enough for even the longest of NVIDIA's video controllers to fit.
In addition, there are five exposed 5.25-inch drive bays, support for 2.5-inch and, of course, 3.5-inch bays and even an I/O panel, placed at the top, with four USB ports and an eSATA connector.
When it comes to cooling prowess, the so-called 'default' option has a pair of 120mm fans on the front, a single, 230mm Colorshift (600-800 RPM) spinner on the side and a 200 Colorshift at the top. There is also a 120mm fan at the back and a graphics card air duct, made in collaboration with NVIDIA, which enhances cooling of 3-way SLI setups. A fan controller is included as well. Finally, for those that want even lower temperatures, pre-drilled watercooling holes are available.
